Last year on our way down to Austria to do a bit of skiing, we decided to make a stop at the Neuschwanstein Castle, just an hour and a half south of Munich. This is the castle that the famous Disney castle is designed after. Most castles that you will find in Germany were built over 500 years ago. This castle however, was built in 1869 and looks very new compared to most. It really does feel like the place where all the Disney princesses get together. Driving up, I could see the castle nestled up on the hill from quite far away.
Once you get there, you can either take a walk through the little town at the base of the mountain and make your way up to the top or take a guided tour which will take you inside the castle. We opted for walking up and enjoyed the views from outside.
The sunset there was amazing and it was a great way to spend a couple of hours.
This is definitely a worthwhile side trip if you are visiting Munich or anywhere nearby! It is a picture perfect spot!
