The rolling green hills, rows of grape vines, beautiful villas… yes I’m talking Tuscany. This past summer we decided to spend a full week in Tuscany and thought a road trip would the perfect way to see as much of this amazing region as possible. Driving along the narrow winding roads, stopping to awe at the view, I could not believe the picturesque setting in front of me was real! The warm sunshine lit up the valley and I could see for miles, the golden hilltops, cyprus trees and small churches. Just being in these surroundings gave me a feeling of peace and I was fully entranced with just taking in the moment. I never wanted to forget this view and this feeling.
We made multiple stops throughout our drive, but my favorites were the stops with a trip to a winery. The Chianti wine region is especially well known and we decided to take the recommendation from a local and visit the Castellare di Castellina Vineyard.
Only a half hour from the main city of Siena, we found the Vineyard, tucked away from the main street, atop a stunning hill full with olive trees and grape vines. I was most excited to learn about the wine making process here and of course, do some sampling :). We were taken on a tour of their heritage wine cellar where our guide explained what is unique about the Castellare method and showed us the strong oak barrels preparing the wines. After, we enjoyed a tasting of all the different red wines they produce including the signature Chianti Classico. We were loving every minute of our time there and we weren’t ready to leave this area when the tour finished, so we made a stop in the little neighboring town of Radda in Chianti. Strolling through the laid back streets with a lemon soda, we came across beautiful old churches, local markets, and delicious truffle salami sandwiches. We also shopped a small grocery store, something we like to do in all new places, to see what local or unique products we could take home with us. Truffle oil was at the top of my list 🙂If you are looking for another winery in Tuscany to visit, Poderi Boscarelli in Montepulciano is the perfect place! Check out our visit here!
Later this week we have an exciting trip to the ancient Etruscan town of Civita di Bagnoregio to share!
