A Visit to Boscarelli Winery in Tuscany

Winery Tour tuscanyOne of the things I was most excited about for our road trip through Tuscany besides the picturesque rolling hills and rows of grape vines, was to actually visit a winery. As I am venturing into my upper twenties and living the working life, I’ve been wanting to also evolve my wine drinking habits from $2 sugar wines to a classier red wine and knowing how to appreciate its fuller taste. I knew Tuscany would be the perfect place to learn a bit about the different wines, what to pair them with, and how to enjoy them.
We drove down to Montepulciano, a small hilltop village in southern Tuscany and stayed at Hotel Panoramic. The views from there were breathtaking! I even forced myself out of bed at 5am and ran outside in my jammies to catch the golden sunrise over the hills. It was over 90 degrees there so the large pool and sun beds were also a huge plus!

So, after soaking up a bit of sun at the pool, we headed over to the winery. The wonderful thing about Boscarelli Winery is that its a smaller, family run winery and therefore really has a personable feeling when you walk in. We didn’t even realize it until we were set up on our own private tour which left lots of time for us to chat with our guide and ask him all sorts of questions about not only the wine making process but, also life in Italy and the wine culture that surround Tuscany.Boscarelli WineryTuscany GrapesTuscan wineryWe also got to sit down with him and try all the different wines they produce along with tasting truffle sausages and aged pecorino cheese 🙂 . He told us stories of growing up as a child, his grandmother would make his favorite snack, bread with a bit of wine and sugar drizzled over it, everyday for them, and when it was hot, a snow cone with a splash of wine.
Wine here is a way of life and part of the family. Every night the families sit down to a home cooked meal and share a bottle of wine together.
I loved hearing this tradition and while I don’t think I’ll be able to drink wine every night, I was definitely inspired to start sharing wine over a meal more often. No TV, just sharing with each other and enjoying the time together. Considering its just my fiancé and I right now, sharing a whole bottle is really a Friday activity 🙂 Tuscan WinesTuscan Wine TourThe experience at Boscarelli was exceptional and I would love to visit them again someday! The wines were hard to beat too 🙂
If you are planning a visit to Montepulciano, which I think you should be ;), check out the Boscarelli website here and just send them an email to book your tour! Fall is a beautiful time to visit Tuscany. The sweltering heat has passed and the golden colors are starting to take over the rolling hills. Fall is also harvest time at the wineries. You’ll probably even come across a Harvest festival or two!
If you missed My favorite reasons to visit the Cinque Terre, read it now!! The beautiful coastal towns set into the hillside are a dream vacation setting for anyone.
Next week I’ll be sharing our experience at Castellare winery in the Chianti region of Tuscany!
